Cleaning Tips for the Outdoors
Make your own saddle soap
Making your own saddle soap can be an easy and cost effective way of keeping your tack sparkling, and can be made simply by using neat’s foot oil, melted beeswax and traditional Soap Flakes.
Start by bringing 1.5litres of water to the boil in a large saucepan. Reduce the heat to a simmer and gradually stir in 24 tablespoons of Soap Flakes until fully dissolved. In the top of a double boiler, heat 225ml of beeswax with 115ml of neat's-foot oil and stir thoroughly. When the mixture is combined, remove from the heat and add to the water and Soap Flakes solution, stirring constantly until the mixture has a thick consistency. Transfer the soap into small containers and allow to cool. When the Saddle Soap has set, apply to leather with a wet sponge, and buff until dry using a soft clean cloth.
